Check out the Vikings’ unofficial depth chart entering Saturday’s exhibition opener

After grinding through a couple of weeks of training camp, the Vikings have released their unofficial depth chart.

Though head coach Kevin O’Connell will likely stress that nothing is set in stone at this point, it’s still worth examining, especially with the Vikings set to host the Las Vegas Raiders in their preseason opener Saturday afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Here’s a full breakdown of where things currently stand for the Vikings across the board:

Quarterback

Starter: Sam Darnold

Backup: J.J. McCarthy or Nick Mullens

Reserve: Jaren Hall

Analysis: No surprise that Darnold is listed as the starter given the fact that he has taken most of the reps with the first team in training camp. Clearly the Vikings aren’t ready to commit to who will be the backup, with McCarthy and Mullens still jockeying for position.

Running Back

Starter: Aaron Jones

Backup: Ty Chandler

Reserves: Kene Nwangwu, Myles Gaskin, DeWayne McBride

Analysis: After signing with the Vikings in free agency, Jones has already been a breath of fresh air in the backfield. He looks as explosive as he’s ever been, and if he can stay healthy, he could be in line for some good production. The expectation is that Chandler also will be a big part of the ground attack.

Fullback

Starter: C.J. Ham

Analysis: There isn’t any competition in training camp so Ham was always going to be the starter for the Vikings.

Receiver

Starters: Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison

Backups: Jalen Nailor and Brandon Powell

Reserves: Trishton Jackson, Jeshaun Jones, Trent Sherfield, Sr., Lucky Jackson, Ty James, Thayer Thomas, Malik Knowles

Analysis: The competition for playing time behind Jefferson and Addison has been something to keep an eye on. That said, the Vikings appear to be giving Nailor a chance to make a move, listing him alongside Powell after an impressive start to training camp.

Tight End

Starter: T.J. Hockenson

Backups: Josh Oliver, Johnny Mundt

Reserves: Nick Muse, Robert Tonyan, N’Keal Harry, Trey Knox, Sammis Reyes

Analysis: The fact that the Vikings are listing Hockenson as the starter doesn’t mean he’s going to be available for Week 1. More than likely Oliver and Mundt will start in his place with Hockenson still recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. There will likely be another roster spot up for grabs among the reserves.

Offensive Line

Starters: Christian Darrisaw (LT), Blake Brandel (LG), Garrett Bradbury (C), Ed Ingram (RG), Brian O’Neill (RT)

Backups: Walter Rouse (LT), Michael Jurgens (LG), Dan Feeney (C), Dalton Risner (RG), David Quessenberry (RT)

Reserves: Jeremy Flax (LT), Tyrese Robinson (LG), Henry Byrd (C), Spencer Rolland (RG), Doug Nester (RT)

Analysis: The starting offensive line has been set pretty much since the start of training camp. The only competition appears to be on the interior with Risner trying to push Brandel and Ingram for playing time. That said, as of right now, the Vikings seem content with how things are going in the trenches.

Defensive Line

Starters: Jerry Tillery, Harrison Phillips, Jonathan Bullard

Backups: James Lynch, Jaquelin Roy, Jonah Williams

Reserves: Levi Drake Rodriguez, Taki Taimani, Jalen Redmond, Tyler Manoa

Analysis: There was concern that Tillery might have suffered an injury over the weekend after going down in a team drill. Not the case. He has been cleared for practice and will continue to slot in alongside Phillips and Bullard up front. The rest of the defensive line is a bit of an enigma with the Vikings trying so many different players at so many different spots.

Edge Rusher

Starters: Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel

Backups: Pat Jones II and Dallas Turner

Reserves: Gabriel Murphy and Jihad Ward, Owen Porter, Andre Carter II and Bo Richter

Analysis: Though some might be surprised to see Greenard and Van Ginkel listed ahead of Turner, the Vikings are going to use all of them to put pressure on the passer. It has been a solid training camp for both Jones and Murphy, and where the Vikings have then listed reflects that.

Linebacker

Starters: Blake Cashman and Ivan Pace, Jr.

Backups: Kamu Grugier-Hill and Brian Asamoah II

Reserves: Dallas Gant and Jabril Cox

Analysis: This is exactly how the Vikings have repped their linebackers throughout training camp. The combination of Cashman and Pace should be fun to watch. It also helps to have depth, so both Grugier-Hill and Asamoah should make the team.

Cornerback

Starters: Shaq Griffin and Byron Murphy, Jr.

Backups: Akayleb Evans and Fabian Moreau

Reserves; Andrew Booth, Jr.; A.J. Green III, Jacobi Francis, Jaylin Williams, Duke Shelley, Dwight McGlothern, NaJee Thompson

Analysis: It’s been tough for the Vikings to get a feel for how things are going to look as Griffin has missed most of training camp with an injury. The fact that Moreau signed last week and is already being listed well ahead of some of his peers speaks to the lack of depth within this group. There are likely a couple of roster spots up for grabs in the preseason, so putting together a good stretch is crucial for anybody on the bubble.

Safety

Starters: Harrison Smith and Camryn Bynum

Backups: Joshua Metellus and Theo Jackson

Reserves: Jay Ward, Lewis Cine, Bobby McCain

Analysis: Truthfully, considering how much the Vikings are going to play him, Metellus should be listed as a starter alongside Smith and Bynum. It has been an impressive training camp for Jackson, and he has put himself in position for a lot of playing time, as well. This might be the end of the road for Cine.

Kicker

Starter: Will Reichard

Analysis: This was a foregone conclusion as Reichard won the kicking competition last week when the Vikings cut John Parker Romo.

Punter

Starter: Ryan Wright

Backup: Seth Vernon

Analysis: It’s hard to gauge if the Vikings are actually considering replacing Wright with Vernon. That will likely be decided in the preseason.

Long Snapper

Starter: Andrew DePaola

Analysis: There is no reason for the Vikings to mess with a good thing as DePaola is among the best in the league at what he does.
