Saints lose 11-inning marathon in Iowa series finale
The St. Paul Saints rallied with a game-tying home run in the ninth inning, then scored four runs in the 10th. But they still wound up losing to Iowa Cubs 10-9 in 11 innings Sunday in their International League series finale in Des Moines.
Trailing 4-3 in the ninth, Payton Eeles hit a solo homer to even the game for the Saints (54-53).
St. Paul briefly took command in the 10th thanks to run-scoring singles by Wynton Bernard and Alex Isola, then a two-run single by Eeles, giving him a career-high four runs batted in on the day
Iowa rallied to tie with four runs of its own in the 10th, thanks to an RBI single by Owen Caissie, an RBI double by Trayce Thompson, then a two-run homer by Chase Strumpf.
The Saints pulled ahead in the 11th on a sacrifice fly from Yunior Severino. But the Cubs’ Caleb Knight ended the marathon with a two-run homer in their half of the 11th.
The Saints return to action at 7:08 p.m. Tuesday when they open a six-game series against the Columbus Clippers at CHS Field.
