Olympics: St. Paul gymnast Suni Lee adds bronze medal on uneven bars
As the last competitor to compete on uneven bars, St. Paul gymnast Suni Lee came up clutch.
Just like she always does.
Though she likely knew it was going to be tough to pass Kaylia Nemour of Algeria, who scored a 15.700, and Qiu Qiyuan of China, who scored a 15.500, Lee was in position to podium if she nailed her routine on Sunday at Bercy Arena in Paris.
That’s exactly what she did.
After captivating the audience with her elegance, Lee hit the dismount, hugged longtime coach Jess Graba, and looked up at the big board awaiting the final results. She gasped when the numbers flashed showing she had scored a 14.800 to secure the bronze medal.
This the latest piece of hardware for Lee at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. She helped U.S. women’s gymnastics team win the gold medal in the team competition last week, then followed it up a couple of days later by earning a bronze medal in the all-around competition.
Now the only thing left for Lee to do is compete on balance beam. She said heading into the Olympics that she was hoping for a gold medal in that event. She will get a chance to do that on Monday.
