Laila Lockhart Kraner is back for new season of ‘Gabby’s Dollhouse’

Unless you’re a pre-teen or the parent of one, you’re probably not familiar with “Gabby’s Dollhouse” or its host Gabby (Laila Lockhart Kraner).

A long-running live action & animated hit on Netflix — its 10th season begins Monday – “Gabby” is magical storytelling with Gabby and her cat friends, the Gabby Cats, miniaturized and animated inside a dollhouse.

Each episode begins with a live Gabby in her bedroom where she opens a package delivered by her Meow-Meow Mailbox that springs into animated Gabby and various Cats.

Kraner began the show when she was 12. Now 16, she lives with her parents in Sherborn.

“How did I start? Well, I used to live in LA — I haven’t always been a Boston girl. When we did live there, I got a lot of comments because I was a pretty outgoing kid.

“My brother plays soccer. That’s important, because I would go to a lot of his soccer games and one of the dads of his teammates was an actor. He would see me at the games, being outgoing and he ended up like chasing my mom to say, ‘You’ve got to get your daughter into acting. She’s perfect.’

“My mom eventually cracked and asked, Would you want to be an actress? I was like five or something. From there I got a manager and went for auditions and then eventually I got Gabby.

“That was a really big moment for me, getting a lead role in something. So, yeah, it all started thanks to one of my brother’s teammates.”

Kraner’s audition allowed her to, in essence, be the character. “They were looking for someone who could have a good connection to the camera. Because a lot of what Gabby — well, most of what Gabby does on the show — is talk to the audience.

“Which is a really big part of why I think a lot of kids resonate with it – because I’m involving them.

“So I think the creators were just looking for something with that and they saw that in me, because I am very expressive. I move my eyebrows a lot. And they just stay connected with that.”

As for her new life in Sherborn, “After Los Angeles, it’s smaller and I love it.”

Does she get recognized?

“Not as much. Sometimes when I’m in Boston, I do. But in my small town, it’s very like nobody really knows anything about all that life and I’m perfectly fine with it.

“Sherborn is very nice town.  I like to see the seasons change. You don’t get that in LA. And I get to walk my dog around nature trails, which you also don’t get in. LA. So I’ve enjoyed it.”

“Gabby’s Dollhouse” launches Season 10 on Netflix Monday.

Gabby’s Dollhouse’s “Party with Marty the Party Cat” tour, a fun free tour of the Playhouse, comes to the Boston area this week. For info, visit www.gabbysdollhouse.com
