2 injured in crash between Chevrolet, St. Paul fire engine responding to emergency

A St. Paul fire truck and a Chevrolet Malibu crashed in downtown St. Paul Saturday night, critically injuring a woman in the Chevrolet, police said.

Fire department personnel extricated two adults from the Chevrolet and St. Paul fire medics transported them to Regions Hospital. A 76-year-old Northfield woman who was a passenger in the car was in critical condition as of Sunday morning. The 77-year-old driver, also from Northfield, was treated at Regions and released.

The fire engine was responding to a fire emergency, according to the fire department. The two vehicles collided in the intersection of East Seventh and Cedar streets, the Minnesota State Patrol said. St. Paul officers were called to the crash just before 7 p.m.

A 39-year-old firefighter was operating the fire engine and he had three passengers on board; no injuries were reported among them, according to the State Patrol.

St. Paul police asked the State Patrol to investigate, due to the involvement of a city vehicle, according to police.
