Minnesota suicide rates dropped in 2023, according to health department

The number of Minnesotans who died from suicide dropped in 2023 compared to the previous year, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.

Suicide deaths in Minnesota have been trending up for the past 20 years, mirroring patterns across the nation. Officials say that in order to achieve a downward trend long term, there needs to be a continued commitment to suicide prevention work.

“Suicide is preventable, recovery is possible and people can seek help by calling or texting 988,” the department said in a press release.

In 2023, 815 people died from suicide, which is down from the historical high of 860 in 2022, according to preliminary data.

“Though it’s positive to see fewer deaths by suicide, even one is too many. We want Minnesotans to know that suicide is preventable, and hope and help is out there,” Minnesota Commissioner of Health Dr. Brooke Cunningham said in a statement.

July marked the two year anniversary of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in the state. Last year, there were 73,738 calls, texts or chats to the line, a 43% increase from 2022.

Health officials said that anyone needs immediate emotional or mental health support, or are worried about someone else, to call or text 988 or visit the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline – Call. Text. Chat. (988lifeline.org) to connect online with a trained counselor.
