Russia to release Wall Street Journal reporter and former U.S. Marine in swap: reports
Russia is releasing Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and a former U.S. Marine in a multi-nation swap, according to multiple reports.
The exchange includes Gershkovich and former Marine Paul Whelan, ABC News is reporting.
Other news outlets are saying the same.
Both are being freed as part of a massive swap of political prisoners and journalists involving the United States and Germany, Fox News can report.
Gershkovich, 32, was arrested by Russian authorities in March 2023 for espionage, a charge he and U.S. officials flatly deny, with President Joe Biden saying Gershkovich was targeted for being a journalist and an American.
Whelan, who holds U.S., British, Irish and Canadian citizenship, was arrested in December 2018 while traveling on an American passport in Russia and also accused of espionage.
