Red Sox expect to activate newly acquired reliever Tuesday night

More reinforcements are expected to arrive at Fenway Park before Tuesday night’s first pitch.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed that right-hander Yohan Ramirez, who was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend, is on his way to Boston is will be active for Tuesday’s game.

The Red Sox expect to announce a corresponding move prior to the game.

Ramirez was designated for assignment by the Dodgers last week after posting a 5.52 ERA in 27 appearances for Los Angeles. He had also pitched for the New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles this season as well, making the Red Sox his fourth big league club since Opening Day.

Though Ramirez will help provide additional depth in the short-term, his time with the club may not last long. Boston will need to make at least one additional move on Wednesday when newly acquired right-hander Lucas Sims arrives from Cincinnati.

Casas begins rehab assignment

Triston Casas (torn cartilage in ribcage) returned to game action for the first time since late April on Tuesday night, beginning his rehab assignment with the Worcester Red Sox. Cora said the plan is for him to play all nine innings and that he won’t have any restrictions.

“He’s full go,” Cora said. “I spoke to (trainer Brandon Henry) yesterday and he’s been taking grounders and doing everything. This is more about getting at bats, because as far as playing, he’s ready, physically.”

Vaughn Grissom (right hamstring strain) is also continuing his rehab assignment in Worcester. The second baseman entered Tuesday night having tallied five hits over his prior four games.

Martin to throw bullpen

Right-hander Chris Martin (right elbow inflammation) is expected to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday, and if all goes well he should begin a rehab assignment “no later than Aug. 7,” Cora said.

Fellow right-hander Justin Slaten (right elbow inflammation) is a little further behind Martin in his recovery but is also improving, Cora said.

As for right-hander Liam Hendriks (Tommy John rehab): “He will pitch this year, he will. That’s real, but as far as rehab assignment, nothing yet,” Cora said.
