Vikings add more depth in secondary, sign veteran safety Bobby McCain

As they continue to monitor the options available on the open market, the Vikings signed veteran safety Bobby McCain on Monday afternoon ahead of practice at TCO Performance Center.

Notably, McCain has a relationship with defensive coordinator Brian Flores dating back to their time together with the Miami Dolphins. Though he has played safety for most of his career, McCain has also played some cornerback, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Vikings get him some reps in that spot.

Most recently, McCain, 30, played for the New York Giants. He contributed mostly as an ace on special teams.

To make room for McCain, the Vikings released kicker John Parker Romo. He had previously been locked in a position battle with rookie kicker Will Reichard. The competition ended over the weekend when Reichard went 5 for 5 on field goal attempts during kicking drills.
