Barmore was diagnosed over the weekend, according to the Patriots. The 25-year-old practiced two days last week before sitting out Friday, when he watched on-field drills in uniform. Barmore was completely absent for Sunday’s session, following an off day Saturday.
The team’s statement read: “Over the weekend, Christian Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots. He was appropriately treated by the doctors at Mass General Brigham, who tested, evaluated and treated Christian. Our principal concern at this time is Christian’s health and wellbeing. Fortunately, Mass General Brigham provides some of the best healthcare in the world. While there is no timetable for his return, we know Christian is getting tremendous care and we look forward to his full recovery.”
Barmore recently became the second-highest paid player in franchise history, signing a 4-year, $84 million extension in late April. He had been entering the final year of his rookie contract. A 2021 second-round pick, Barmore broke out last season with 8.5 sacks and 64 tackles. He started six of 17 regular-season games.
Without him, the Patriots are down to Davon Godchaux, Daniel Ekuale, Armon Watts, Sam Roberts, Jeremiah Pharms Jr., Trysten Hill and newly-signed Josiah Bronson at defensive tackle.
Patriots coach Jerod Mayo is set to meet the media Monday at 10:30 a.m., when he is expected to address Barmore’s situation shortly before the team’s next training camp practice.
In 2019, Patriots center David Andrews missed the entire season with blood clots in his lungs. Andrews practiced most of the summer, even coughing up blood on the first day of training camp. He finally visited a doctor in late August and was hospitalized for several days, before being given a recovery timeline of three to six months.
Andrews opened up about his condition later that spring in an interview with 247Sports.
“I had been dealing with some chest pains and troubling breathing, started coughing blood the first day we reported to training camp actually,” Andrews said. “All of this was partly my fault, just being dumb and pushing through it. I thought I was sick and I really did not feel like myself. It was not like I was having a bad camp. I just was not having a consistent camp.”
Andrews returned to play in 2020, starting all 12 games he played. It’s unknown when the next update on Barmore’s condition will be made public.
