Report: Red Sox acquire LHP James Paxton from Dodgers

A reunion between the Red Sox and left-hander James Paxton appears imminent.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan and multiple other reports, the Red Sox are acquiring Paxton from the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers designed the veteran lefty for assignment earlier this week, and the Red Sox had been among numerous teams that reached out to inquire about a trade.

The terms of the trade have not yet been confirmed. FanSided’s Robert Murray was first to report the trade talks.

The Boston Red Sox are acquiring left-hander James Paxton in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, sources tell ESPN. Done deal.

Paxton, 35, will return to Boston, where he spent the 2023 season, after being DFA’d by the Dodgers. In 89.1 innings this season, he has a 4.43 ERA.

Before signing a one-year deal with the Dodgers this past offseason, Paxton spent the prior two seasons with the Red Sox. He sat out his entire first season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, and in 2023 he returned to the mound and posted a 4.50 ERA over 96 innings and 19 starts.

This year Paxton was one of only two Dodgers starters to make every start before he was designated for assignment, but his performance has been inconsistent. The 35-year-old has posted a 4.43 ERA over 89.1 innings and 18 starts, but he’s also walked an NL-high 48 batters while recording only 64 strikeouts.

Despite his up-and-down performance, Paxton has answered lingering questions about his durability and would help shore up a Red Sox rotation that has taken a big hit with Lucas Giolito and Garrett Whitlock’s season-ending injuries.

He would also give the club a different look considering he’d become the only left-handed starting pitcher on the roster.
