Patriots extra points: Move back to guard surprising for Mike Onwenu

FOXBORO — Mike Onwenu finds himself in a uniqe situation.

He signed a three-year, $51 million contract extension with the Patriots this offseason but currently finds himself without a set position.

Onwenu started the spring out at right tackle but finished the offseason workout program at right guard. He was lined up at right guard to begin training camp on Wednesday with veteran Calvin Anderson at right tackle, Chukwuma Okorafor at left tackle, Sidy Sow at left guard and David Andrews at center.

“Wherever the team needs me is where I’ll be, essentially. I’ll keep practicing at whatever position,” Onwenu said Wednesday after practice. “Gameday, we’ll see where I am.”

Onwenu said it was a little surprising when the team moved him back to guard during the spring.

“But pretty much I’m a football player, and I’ve done it in the past,” Onwenu said. “I started as a guard, started as a jumbo tackle and then I played tackle. It’s just one of the positions that I play.”

He was asked if there’s a set time when he’d like to know what position he’ll play this season.

“I’m a ballplayer, so before the game day would probably be nice,” he said to laughs.

Rookie Caedan Wallace is another option to start at tackle. If Onwenu moves back to tackle, then Nick Leverett and Atonio Mafi could start at guard until Cole Strange returns from a knee injury.
