Red Sox 3B Rafael Devers avoids injury after scary sixth-inning incident

For a moment it looked like the Red Sox season might have just gone up in smoke.

In a play eerily reminiscent of the one that ended Trevor Story’s season in April, Rafael Devers appeared to injure his right shoulder on a diving play in the bottom of the sixth of Tuesday’s game in Colorado, prompting shortstop Ceddanne Rafaela to frantically call for the trainer as the All-Star third baseman writhed on the ground in pain.

Alex Cora and the training staff immediately rushed out, but after a couple of moments Devers was able to get to his feet and remain in the game. The Red Sox would go on to win 6-0 to snap their four-game losing streak and Devers made several throws from third in the subsequent innings while flying out in his last at bat.

Cora said afterwards that Devers is ok and they don’t expect he’ll miss any time.

“Obviously (you fear) the worst, we’ve been through this before, but he’s ok, he just jammed it,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said afterwards. “He took some vicious hacks in the last at bat and he says he’ll be ready for tomorrow.”

Devers told reporters later that he landed on his shoulder badly and was initially scared, but that it soon became apparent that he’d avoided injury. He said he didn’t feel much pain afterwards and while he’ll need to see how things feel in the morning once his body has cooled off, he’s optimistic he’ll be back in the lineup for the series finale.

“I think everything’s going to be ok,” Devers said via translator Carlos Villoria Benítez. “Like I said before it’s nothing serious, I like to play so I feel like I’m going to be able to play tomorrow.”

Devers had been struggling through the first four games following the All-Star Break, but on Tuesday he broke out of his slump by going 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles. Overall Devers is batting .286 with 23 home runs and a .948 OPS, making the 27-year-old one of the league’s most productive hitters through the season’s first 100 games.
