Kamala Harris breaks fundraising record, pulls in $81 million in a single day

If donors were scared at the prospect of sending an 81-year-old President Joe Biden back to the campaign trail after his disastrous late-June debate performance, they seem downright invigorated, and generous, at the idea of offering Vice President Kamala Harris as foil to former President Donald Trump.

In the 24 hours that followed the sudden and shocking announcement by President Joe Biden that he would suspend his campaign for the presidency to make way for his vice president, the Biden-Harris 2024 campaign had morphed into the Harris for President campaign and raised more than $81 million.

According to Harris for President Spokesperson Kevin Munoz, donations from over 888,000 “grassroots donors” represent a shift in the Democratic party’s sentiments about the looming general election.

“The historic outpouring of support for Vice President Harris represents exactly the kind of grassroots energy and enthusiasm that wins elections. Already, we are seeing a broad and diverse coalition come together to support our critical work of talking to the voters that will decide this election,” Munoz said in a statement.

Most of the donors over the last day were making their first donation of the election, according to the campaign, and the $81 million figure is the “highest 24-hour raise of any candidate in history.”

“This haul reflects money raised across the campaign, Democratic National Committee, and joint fundraising committees. This surge of support is also accompanied by numerous endorsements from federal and state elected officials as well as major Democratic and advocacy groups united in the effort to defeat Donald Trump this November,” the campaign wrote.

A single Zoom call Sunday evening held by the group Win With Black Women — a meeting that was scheduled to be attended by 1,000 but was eventually joined by over 40,000 — raised more than $1.6 million, the campaign said.

“There is a groundswell behind Kamala Harris, and Donald Trump is terrified because he knows his divisive, unpopular agenda can’t stand up to the Vice President’s record and vision for the American people,” Munoz said.

That’s on top of the $95 million Harris has available from Biden’s war chest. In a letter sent to the Federal Elections Commission on Sunday, Harris for President Treasurer Keana Spencer proclaimed “that Vice President Harris is no longer a candidate in the 2024 election for Vice President.”

“Vice President Harris is now a candidate for United States President in the 2024 election and will henceforth be conducting campaign activities only in pursuit of that office,” she wrote.
