Gov. Maura Healey says all Steward Hospitals in Mass. received bids last week

All of Steward Health Care’s operation Massachusetts hospitals received bids for purchase during an auction held last week, Gov. Maura Healey said without providing further details.

The Dallas-based health care company, in the midst of bankruptcy proceedings, was due to sell its Massachusetts hospital properties to the highest bidder last Monday. The auction date, however, came and went without any information about the sale.

That was the case until Healey said this Tuesday that the company’s operational Bay State properties had all received bids in the bankruptcy auction.

“We’ve received qualified bids, we’re evaluating those now and it’s currently with the parties right now in New York,” she said.

Steward, which operates eight Bay State Hospitals, announced in May that it wasn’t able to keep up with its debts and would need to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Shortly after, the company’s attorneys informed a Texas court they would sell their hospital properties at a series of auctions. The company’s properties in Massachusetts were to be part of the first round of auctions, with bids due last Monday.

Healey’s comments on the matter are the first the public has heard of what might happen with Steward’s Bay State properties.

Just last week, Department of Public Health Commissioner Robbie Goldstein said the state was in the dark on the matter, and the Attorney General’s office could provide no information on the day of the auction despite asking the courts to keep them informed.

The governor seemed to indicate the state now finds itself in a holding pattern while the matter is in progress “with the parties right now in New York.”

“So we’re gonna wait to see what happens at the end of today. My focus remains on protecting jobs, protecting patients, and protecting the stability of the healthcare market here in Massachusetts. So it’s something that’s evolving and we’ll continue to keep you updated and apprised on the developments,” she said.

Steward facilities in Massachusetts include Carney Hospital in Dorchester, Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, Holy Family Hospitals in Haverhill and Methuen, Morton Hospital in Taunton, Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer, Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, and St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton. The company’s Norwood Hospital has been closed since 2020 due to flooding, and the company closed New England Sinai Hospital permanently in April.
