Five Red Sox among Baseball America’s midseason Top 100 prospects

Baseball America has released its midseason Top 100 Prospects list, and five Red Sox up-and-comers were among those who made the cut.

Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony and Kyle Teel, the club’s consensus top three prospects, all remained high on the list at No. 10, 18 and 31, respectively. They were joined by outfielder Braden Montgomery, who Boston selected No. 12 overall in last week’s MLB Draft, at No. 63, and by fast-rising infielder Kristian Campbell, who snuck in at No. 99.

Mayer and Anthony’s rankings were both in line with where they’d been previously, and Teel enjoyed an impressive jump from his preseason rank of No. 62. He is batting .305 with nine home runs, 35 RBI and an .861 OPS in his first full season of professional baseball and is considered a strong contender for a Triple-A promotion in the near future, as are Mayer and Anthony.

Montgomery was also considered among the top players in this year’s draft class and was not expected to be available by the time the Red Sox picked at No. 12. He batted .322 with 27 home runs and 85 RBI this past spring with Texas A&M, though he won’t debut in the Red Sox system for a little while due to a broken ankle he suffered in the NCAA Super Regional.

Campbell has arguably been Boston’s fastest rising prospect this season. Originally a fourth-round pick out of Georgia Tech in last summer’s MLB Draft, selected with the compensatory pick acquired after losing Xander Bogaerts in free agency, the 22-year-old infielder has dominated his first full season as a professional. He currently ranks among the top hitters in Double-A with a .395 batting average, four home runs, 22 RBI and a 1.094 OPS in 35 games with the Portland Sea Dogs.
