MassGOP reports mood of ‘perseverance’ at convention
The first day of the Republican National Convention was Monday, and the attendees in the room were jubilant and celebratory as the party looked forward to reanointing former President Donald Trump and getting behind the newly nominated 2024 ticket.
That’s a sharp break from Sunday, when the party and the nation were reeling from the assassination attempt made against the 45th President and Republican nominee.
MassGOP Executive Director John Milligan told the Herald that delegates were “very excited” to be at the convention, despite the weekend’s events. MassGOP Chairwoman Amy Carnevale said the “mood in Milwaukee is one of perseverance.”
“The fact that there was an assassination attempt of our nominee just ahead of the nominating convention is certainly unnerving to all Americans,” the Carnevale told the Herald through a spokesperson. “However, President Trump has signaled to Republicans that we must push forward stronger than ever.”
Monday’s session was taken up with the business of nominating Trump along with his newly named running mate, Ohio’s U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance.
The convention runs for four days, and Trump is scheduled to speak Thursday. Trump has apparently re-written his address following Saturday’s shooting to soften the tone, but according to Carnevale the party’s message is unchanged.
“Republicans are united and resolute in our determination to defeat Joe Biden in November,” she said.
Trump Campaign Senior Advisors Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita said in a joint statement that Monday’s nomination of Trump and Vance represents the “most unifying and competitive ticket in political history.”
“After President Trump secured the Republican nomination in record time, enthusiasm continues to grow for his movement to Make America Great Again, and we will deliver a sweeping victory for the Trump-Vance ticket on November 5,” they said.
