South Africa June 2024: Toyota and Hilux lead, Chery up, Land Cruiser Prado surges

The new generation pushes the Land Cruiser Prado to #15.

New vehicle sales in South Africa endure a 10th month of year-on-year losses in the past 11 at -14% to 40,072 units. The H1 2024 tally stands at 246,052, down -7.4% over the same period in 2023. Exports are up 3.6% to 28,306 for the month but off -9.6% to 156,244 year-to-date. According to local manufacturers association NAAMSA, there is reason to be optimistic though, as the markets seem to have responded positively to the announcement of the new Cabinet. Toyota (-25.1%) remains by far the best-selling manufacturer in the country even though it falls heavily. The VW Group (-1.1%), Suzuki (-0.9%) and Ford (-4.4%) resist well as do Hyundai (-10.5%) and Isuzu (-8.8%) to a lesser extent. Nissan (-20%) dives at #7. Chery (+17.9%) continues to swim upstream and manages the only year-on-year uptick in the Top 10.

Over in the models charts, the Toyota Hilux (-35.8%) keeps the lead but sinks year-on-year, with the VW Polo Vivo (+18.2%) in great shape and nipping at its heels. The Ford Ranger (-11%), Isuzu D-Max (-8.1%) and Toyota Corolla Cross (-25.4%) all recede to round out the Top 5. The Chery Tiggo 4 Pro (+52%) surges ahead to a record 6th place. It is with the Hyundai Grand i10 (+3.4%) the remaining up model in the Top 10. The Mahindra Scorpio Pik Up (+25.2%) and Nissan Magnite (+15.2%) also shine below. The star of the month is the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado coming out of nowhere directly to 15th place.
