ISL team defeats MIAA squad during an entertaining boys lacrosse all-star game
WESTWOOD – Since its inception 13 years ago, the BostonLax All-American Game has become an annual tradition, a unique chance where fans can see some of the best lacrosse players from the Independent School League and the MIAA competing on one field.
Thanks in part to Thayer standout Teddy Lally, the prep stars were able to earn some bragging rights in the latest showcase. The Notre Dame commit registered a hat trick, as the ISL defeated the MIAA in a 17-13 shootout at Xaverian Brothers High School.
“It’s a lot of fun,” said Lally with a chuckle. “Coming out here, playing against some of the guys I played club with. It’s a really great time, also playing with some of the guys I played high school with, some of the coaches (I know), it was fun.”
It was the 12th installment of the Boston Lax All-American showcase, and the third instance in which the MIAA and the ISL were organized into separate teams. The two athletic organizations split their initial two meetings, with the MIAA winning in 2023, 13-9. Prior to the event, BostonLax and the participants held a moment of silence to remember the lives of beloved lacrosse media members Bruce Lerch and Ryan Kilian, a touching tribute for the crowd assembled along Clapboardtree Street.
For most of the opening quarter Tuesday, it appeared the game itself was trending in a similar direction to last summer, as Scituate standout Willy Robinson buried a goal to put his team ahead, 3-1 with seven minutes left in the frame.
However, once the second quarter began, Lally and his group began to heat up. The Thayer junior put the ISL ahead for the first time in the evening, as he netted a goal to make it 4-3 with 11:48 to play in the first half. He would tack on one more tally shortly thereafter, as the ISL out-scored the MIAA at a 7-1 clip in the stanza to construct a 10-4 advantage at the break.
While the MIAA attempted to stage a furious rally in the second half, the six-goal deficit was too much to overcome. Lally sealed the deal in impressive fashion, as he ducked around a defenseman and ripped a rocket into the twine to complete the hat trick. With 9:28 to play in regulation, the ISL was leading, 15-11. From there, the All-Stars were able to close the deal, and Lally was later named one of the BostonLax All-American Players of the Game.
“It’s a real honor to be named that,” said Lally. “There’s a lot of great players out here, good competition too. So, I tried to come out here and show that I deserve it.”
The ISL also received outstanding contributions from Tabor Academy’s Evan O’Neil (hat trick), and from Lally’s Thayer teammate with Gus Beudry adding a goal in the effort.
Needham’s Jack Curran was named the MIAA’s selection for the BostonLax All-American Game. The Richmond commit made multiple key stops defensively, setting his squad up for some prime chances in transition. Robinson sniped a pair of goals, as did Luke Kelly of St. John’s Prep and Hopkinton star Logan DelPonte.
For Curran, it was another great accolade to add to the trophy case. He was happy to wear his original Needham jersey one final time.
“It’s huge, because we’re always just having fun out here and getting creative,” said Curran. “Even with all the private school guys, I’ve played club with all of them. We just had Nike yesterday, and I was down in Maryland with half of these guys. We just have fun out here, and it means a lot.”
