Dartmouth suspends frat, sorority after student dies as police investigate hazing allegations
Dartmouth College has suspended a frat and sorority after a student died following a joint social gathering over the weekend, as police investigate hazing allegations.
The Beta Alpha Omega fraternity and Alpha Phi sorority have been suspended by the New Hampshire college after 20-year-old Won Jang was found dead in the Connecticut River on Sunday.
“Dartmouth has suspended two Greek organizations, Beta Alpha Omega and Alpha Phi, as the investigation continues, and we are working closely with the Hanover Police Department, which is leading the investigation,” a Dartmouth spokesperson said in a statement on Tuesday.
Hanover police and fire departments responded to a report of a missing Dartmouth student on Sunday at around 3:15 p.m.
Jang had last been seen by the docks of the river at around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.
First responders found Jang’s body about 65 feet offshore at around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.
“The entire Dartmouth community is grieving over the tragic loss of Won Jang,” the Dartmouth spokesperson said. “Our counseling team has been by the family’s side since yesterday, and Dartmouth is providing every possible support it can to Won’s parents, family and friends.”
The preliminary police investigation revealed that foul play is not suspected, but Hanover Police are looking into the reports of hazing.
“There is some evidence of some alcohol involved, certainly from witnesses,” Hanover Police Charles Dennis told WMUR.
“We did receive an anonymous email this morning through the college that there may be some hazing involved,” he added. “So certainly we will look into that aspect, too.”
