France June 2024: Renault Group outsells Stellantis, Megane E-Tech #1 EV, hits record ranking

The Renault Megane E-Tech is the best-selling EV in France in June.

The French new car market endures a second consecutive month of year-on-year losses in June at a worsening -4.8% to 181,712 sales. This is to be compared with the 230,965 units of pre-pandemic June 2019. The year-to-date volume is now up a meagre 2.8% to 914,830. In June, petrol sales are down a harsh -20.4% to 54,360, diesel is off -8.5% to 16,198, HEVs soar 35.3% to 62,357 including 28,020 mild hybrids. PHEVs sink -21.7% to 14,044, BEVs skid -10.5% to 29,842 and 16.4% share vs. 17.5% in June 2023. Finally LPG registrations implode -34.3% to 4,604. Over H1 2024, petrol is down -13.1% to 293,695, diesel loses -22.9% to 72,362, HEV surge 36.8% to 280,511 including 119,594 mild hybrids (+42.4%), PHEVs drop -5.5% to 73,687 and BEVs improve 15.1% to 158,906 and 17.4% share vs. 15.5% over H1 2023.

Alpine sales are up 64.1% year-on-year in June.

There is a historic result this month in France: for the first time since its creation in January 2021, the Stellantis Group, with its 10 brands, is outsold by the Renault Group with its 3 brands. Indeed Stellantis sells 45,426 units in June (-13.2%) for a 25% share while Renault Group is at 47,358 (-3.8%) for a 26.1% share. Renault (+1.3%) edges up with Alpine (+64.1%) euphoric but Dacia (-16.4%) suffers. As for Stellantis, only Jeep (+31%), Abarth (+94.5%) and Alfa Romeo (+0.7%) smile just as Fiat (-30.5%), Maserati (-41.7%), DS (-27.1%), Opel (-23%) and Peugeot (-15.1%) all freefall. Citroen (-1.3%) beats the market at last and is back up one spot on May to #5 overall. Volkswagen (+17.9%) overtakes Dacia to take the third spot for the month. Other great performers include Suzuki (+67%), Skoda (+42.6%) hitting its highest ever ranking at #11, Mercedes (+15.3%), BMW (+14.8%), Audi (+13.7%) and Ford (+11.7%).

The Peugeot 3008 III misses out on its first Top 10 finish by just 17 sales.

The Renault Clio (-23.8%) easily tops the models charts with 5.2% share and despite a hefty year-on-year loss. It has a gap of over 3,000 units on the Peugeot 208 (-21.9%) at 3.6% share. The 208 however remains at #1 year-to-date, but its advantage over the Clio has shrunk to 2,576 sales. Just below are the Renault Captur (+6.7%) up to spots to #3 and the Dacia Sandero (-7.6%) down one to #4. The Sandero is again the favourite vehicle of private buyers with 5,163 sales on this channel. The Peugeot 2008 (+2.6%), Citroen C3 III (-20%) and Peugeot 308 (-27.4%) follow. The Renault Megane E-Tech lifts 37% year-on-year to a record #8, beating its previous record of #9 reached in September 2022. It is the best-selling BEV in the country this month, outselling the Tesla Model Y (-50.3%) and Model 3 (-54.1%). The Toyota Yaris (-6.9%) and Renault Arkana (-0.4%) round out the Top 10. The new Peugeot 3008 III is up 22 ranks on May to miss out on a first Top 10 finish by just 17 sales at #11. It notably outsells the Renault Austral (-19.7%) at #15. Notice also the Dacia Duster III up to #27, the VW Tiguan III up to #41 and the Renault Scenic up to #60.

A new generation Renault Master is about to hit French roads.

210,609 new Light Commercial Vehicles found a buyer over the First Half of 2024 in France, a sturdy 10.4% year-on-year gain. Renault (+19.7%) surges ahead to lift its market share to 30.8% ahead of Peugeot (+8%) at 16.7% and Citroen (-7.4%) at 13.2%. Ford (+27.5%) and Volkswagen (+11.8%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10 with Toyota (+8.6%), Mercedes (+7%), Iveco (+3.8%) and Fiat (+2.2%) more discreet. As for models, the Renault Master III (+29.4%) maintains itself in the lead just as a 4th generation is about to hit the roads, it distances the Renault Trafic (+38.9%), Peugeot Partner (+7%) and Renault Kangoo (+39.1%). The Toyota Hilux (-32.3%) is the best-selling pickup ahead of the Ford Ranger (-47.1%) and Isuzu D-Max (+66.9%).
