Revolution look to get back on track Wednesday against Atlanta United

Get over it and move on.

That was the message New England head coach Caleb Porter delivered as he prepared the Revolution for Wednesday night’s (7:45) encounter with Atlanta United FC at Gillette Stadium. The game is the middle of three matches in eight days for the Revolution.

The Revolution’s rise to relevance after four straight wins took a knockdown blow with Saturday night’s 5-1 home loss to the reigning MLS champion Columbus Crew at the Razor.

The Crew derailed New England’s win streak with three unanswered goals in the first and two more gut punches in the second to complete the worst beatdown the Revolution have absorbed in 11 losses this season.

“We’ve got to get turned around quickly,” said Porter. “We showed some film, there were details that we need to correct (because) it was a game we didn’t execute in those details.

“When you’re winning sometimes, you can slip in the details and get a little casual. Against good teams, if you are overconfident and you don’t execute you are going to get punished. They certainly punished us. We have to erase it, put it behind us and get ready for Atlanta.”

The Revolution were handicapped from the onset with both leading scorer and playmaker Carles Gil and dynamic forward Dylan Borrero off the grid with minor injuries. Porter hopes to have both back on the pitch for AUFC but their status is questionable.

The Revolution (6-11-1) are in 14th place and Atlanta United FC is in ninth (6-8-6) but there is only five points separating them in the MLS Eastern Division. AUFC is one of the teams the Revolution are intent on passing in their second-half push for one of the final playoff spots.

“It would have been nice to beat Columbus, but actually, in some ways this is the more important game because you can’t lose to teams that are in and around you and give them points,” said Porter.

“They are in the hunt for the playoffs so it is important that we bounce back. I reminded the guys that we won four in a row and we are really playing well and we can’t forget about that. But we need to use this last game as a little bit of a wakeup call and continue to remind ourselves that we have to improve, keep improving.”

Atlanta United FC holds the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference so the Revolution can find their way into the postseason with a successful second half.

“The playoffs are always in the back of your head,” said homegrown midfielder Noel Buck. “But I think the main focus is to just win and keep going up the standings and just getting points after points and wins after wins.

“We are really hungry to make the playoffs. It was not a great start to the year and we are really looking to fix that. All of us are angry and hungry to keep going and get a better result on Wednesday.”

Like the Revolution, Atlanta United FC has a first-year head coach. Rob Valentino has changed formations while making structural and personnel changes and he works for an organization that isn’t afraid to spend money. AUFC has one of the most rabid fan bases in MLS and average a league best 47,526 per game.

AUFC has scored 28 goals in 20 games for a 1.40 goals per game average while allowing 25 for a plus three goals differential. Atlanta United FC scored four of those goals in a 4-1 home victory over the Revolution on March 6, New England’s second worst loss of the season.

Thiago Almada became the focal point of AUFC attack after Giorgos Giakoumakis transferred to Cruz Azul of Liga MX on June 16. Almada leads the club in goals (6), shots (56), shots on target (21) and yellow cards (5).
