Red Sox extra innings: Struggling Brayan Bello’s next start pushed back
Coming off his worst outing of the season, Brayan Bello’s next start has been pushed back three days so the Red Sox right-hander can get some extra rest and try to reset his season. Bello will now start the second game of the club’s upcoming series against Miami next Wednesday, and Josh Winckowski will start Sunday’s finale against San Diego in his place.
“If it’s mechanically or mental, whatever, just give him a breather,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “That’s the most important thing.”
Though Bello has demonstrated improved stuff, his command has been all over the map this season, especially lately. Over his past eight starts Bello has posted a 7.49 ERA with an eye-watering 1.790 walks and hits per innings pitched, and things came to a head Tuesday when he allowed a season-worst seven runs over a season-low 2.1 innings.
Cora said Wednesday that Bello isn’t trying to overthrow the ball, and he even told him that he’d rather throw 91 mph and throw strikes than throw 98 and be all over the place.
“At least he recognizes what the problem is and now we have to solve it, and we will,” Cora said. “This guy is very important for us now and for the organization in the future, and like I told him, we are where we’re at and you haven’t performed, quote-unquote, but you get going and it should be fun the rest of the way.”
Bello, the club’s Opening Day starter, is currently 7-5 with a 5.55 ERA in 71.1 innings on the season.
