Warm and humid days ahead with thunderstorms possible midweek, NWS says

Sunday’s gusting winds and regional tornado watch should clear by Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service, leaving hot and humid weather in their wake.

The first full week of summer will start off warm, but not nearly as hot as the recent record-breaking days the region just sweated its way through, and thunderstorms are possible midweek, Bill Leatham, a meteorologist with the NWS said Sunday.

“It looks like, for this week ahead, the first half of the week is looking hot and humid,” he said.

Monday will see high temperatures creep into the middle-80s, Leatham said, with mostly sunny skies and a slight chance of rain — 20%, according to NWS — in the morning before 9 a.m. Clouds should roll in overnight, when the temperature is expected to drop into the middle 60s.

There should be more sun on Tuesday, Leatham said, and another mid-80 degree day with humid conditions.

Heading into the next day clouds again roll in, though the overnight low could stay as high as 70, according to the weather service.

“The middle of the week is really our next chance for showers or thunderstorms,” Leatham said.

Wednesday, according to Leatham, will be the “warmest of the coming days” and Boston could see highs creep back into the lower 90s. The chance of rain jumps to about 30% after 4 p.m., and thunderstorms are forecast to start before 2 a.m. on Thursday.

The chance of rain climbs toward 70% through the night while the thunder and lightning play themselves out for a couple of hours and then turn to showers.

Thunderstorms might come back again just before the start of Thursday’s morning commute, with rain forecast at 50% chance through most of the day, according to the weather service. High temperatures on Thursday should top out in the middle 80s, Leatham said.

Friday should be cooler, but still sunny, according to the weather service, with high temperatures in the mid-to-upper 70s and a very light breeze.

Both Saturday and Sunday are showing as partly sunny as of now, with a chance of rain Sunday and highs in the low-to-middle 80s both days.

A tornado watch in effect on Sunday afternoon was scheduled to end at 8 p.m. across most of Massachusetts, parts of Vermont and New Hampshire.
