McMurtry Speirling EV Destroys All Around Hockenheim, even the Mercedes-AMG One

McMurtry’s Spéirling EV has made a significant mark at Hockenheim, surpassing even the formidable Mercedes-AMG One with an astonishing lap time of 1 minute and 24.4 seconds around the Grand Prix circuit. This achievement shaves off a substantial 14.1 seconds from the AMG One’s previous record, firmly establishing the Spéirling as the fastest closed-wheel car around the track. Notably, this tiny but potent electric vehicle outpaced not only the AMG One but also a DTM race car, improving on the previous track record by 3.9 seconds.

However, it’s important to note that the Spéirling is purpose-built for track performance, equipped with a single seat and racing slicks, unlike the AMG One, which blends road car prowess with Formula 1 technology. Despite utilizing only 75 percent of its power and downforce during the record-setting run with a validation prototype, the Spéirling demonstrated exceptional capabilities.

Behind the wheel for this remarkable feat was former F1 driver Max Chilton, adding to his accolades that include setting a lap record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the same vehicle. With dimensions that make it significantly smaller than a Mazda Miata but packing approximately 1,000 horsepower, the Spéirling showcases extreme power-to-weight efficiency, weighing less than 2,200 pounds.

Despite its microscopic size, the Spéirling accommodates a 60-kWh battery that can be fast-charged in under 20 minutes, delivering enough juice for 10 laps at full throttle at Silverstone. Such performance, however, comes at a steep price of £895,000 before taxes and delivery, reflecting its exclusive nature with only 100 units slated for production, set to begin deliveries in 2025.
