Editorial: Thank you, Celtics!

The Celtics championship is a boost for Boston.

The teamwork and athleticism they exhibited are the best in the basketball world today.

But this win goes beyond the realm of basketball, sparking a wave of excitement and anticipation that will see thousands lining the streets of the city tomorrow for the much-awaited traditional Duck Boat parade.

There is no substitute for working together. We’re all human and prone to selfishness, but success depends on superior communication and that deserves its own Duck Boat.

It all started with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. These two “stars” of the Celtics played with passion and intelligence. Tatum said that if he was “triple-teamed” he was going to find the open player. Winning supersedes individual glory and he showed leadership while suppressing his own stats.

Brown, snubbed by the All-NBA voters, showed just how wrong other experts can be. He ignored the noise to focus on what matters. He reached a pinnacle nobody can ever take from him. He was the MVP of both the Finals and the conference championship.

History will show that the stars aligned for us on 617!

Al Horford, Derrick White, Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porziņģis, Payton Pritchard, Sam Hauser, Xavier Tillman, Oshae Brissett and Luke Kornet and the rest had a singular goal to win it all. Exhaustion and complacency can poison any organization, but they pushed that aside.

Head Coach Joe Mazzulla and his staff deserve a lion’s share of the credit as does General Manager Brad Stevens and his assistants. Any organization is only as good as those pulling the strings and letting talent rise to the top.

This win is about achieving greatness when society lately seems to accept mediocrity.

“Greatness is not a function of circumstance,” author Jim Collins writes in his book “Good to Great.”

“Greatness, it turns out, is largely a matter of conscious choice, and discipline,” he adds. “Great vision without great people is irrelevant. A company should limit its growth based on its ability to attract enough of the right people.”

The Celtics have achieved greatness and we are all better off for the example they set.
