New Car Preview: 2025 BMW X3

BMW is continuing its streak of updates with the introduction of the 2025 X3, following enhancements to the 2 Series and M3 models. This new iteration of the X3, slated for release later this year in the United States, will be available in two trims: the X3 30 xDrive and the X3 M50 xDrive. Notably, neither variant includes the “i” in its name, a designation BMW now reserves exclusively for its electric vehicles.

Powertrains and Performance

The X3 30 xDrive is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, generating 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. While this offers more power than the previous non-hybrid model, its performance metrics remain consistent, achieving 0-60 mph in 6.0 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph.

The X3 M50 xDrive features an electrified 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine, producing 393 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque. This enables the vehicle to reach 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, matching the performance of the outgoing X3 M40i. Its top speed is electronically capped at 155 mph with performance tires, or 130 mph with standard all-season tires. Both trims come standard with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

Design and Dimensions

The 2025 X3 boasts a completely redesigned exterior that is larger than its predecessor, while maintaining the same 112.8-inch wheelbase. The new dimensions are 187.2 inches in length, 75.6 inches in width, and 65.4 inches in height, making it 1.3 inches longer, 1.1 inches wider, and 1.0 inch lower.

The X3 30 xDrive trim features larger kidney grilles with vertical and diagonal bars, new headlights with L-shaped indicators serving multiple functions, and full LED headlights as an option. The rear design includes integrated tailpipes on the entry-level model, and standard 19-inch alloy wheels with 20- and 21-inch options.

The X3 M50 xDrive comes with 20-inch alloy wheels, M-specific kidney grilles with horizontal bars, M Sport brakes, and quad tailpipes. It also features an illuminated grille and performance enhancements like Adaptive M Sport suspension, variable sport steering, and the M Sport rear differential.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the new X3 is equipped with the BMW Curved Display and the iDrive 9 infotainment system, initially introduced in the 2024 BMW X1. New features include QuickSelect for easy access to frequently used functions. The cargo space offers 31.5 cubic feet, expandable to 67.1 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, and the vehicle can tow up to 4,850 pounds with an optional trailer hitch.

Standard interior features include adjustable heated sports seats and a flat-bottom steering wheel, with seat color options and an optional M Veganza/Alcantara combination. For the first time, BMW offers a woven fabric instrument panel in the X3.

Pricing and Availability

The entry-level 2025 X3 30 xDrive is priced at $50,675, while the sportier X3 M50 xDrive starts at $65,275, reflecting price increases of $780 and $2,380 over the 2024 models, respectively. The 2025 X3 will be manufactured at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina facility and will be available for purchase in the fourth quarter of 2024.
