Repeat performance for Seekonk after 8-0 victory over Pittsfield

WORCESTER – A star-studded pitching staff has powered the Seekonk baseball team all season, so it was only fitting for one more gem to highlight a repeat state championship Saturday afternoon at Polar Park.

Sophomore Javi Borges fanned 14 batters over 6.1 scoreless inning, pairing with a five-run first inning from the offense, to lift No. 4 Seekonk (22-3) to an 8-0 win over No. 6 Pittsfield in the Div. 4 state final.

Borges allowed just three hits and a walk, holding the Generals (19-6) without a hit with runners in scoring position before sophomore Cole Arruda tossed the final two outs with a runner on second base.

Borges also batted 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Declan Lush (1-for-2, two runs), Tyler Kropis (two RBI) and Greyson Baldizar (2-for-3, RBI, run) also stood out.

“I think (repeating is) the mentality they had all year long,” said Seekonk head coach Joe DeMelo. “When we left here last year, it was, ‘We’re going to come back.’ They just work hard. We don’t have a big roster to pick from, so the guys that are here gave it their all.”

“I’m so excited,” Borges added. “We did it again. And we’re going to try to do it again (next year), and that makes me so excited.”

Borges was nearly untouchable with three perfect innings to start the game, setting down eight of nine batters via strikeout. His mix of pitches struck out seven batters looking, setting up his fastball to help strike out the side in order three different times.

“Not at all (surprised),” DeMelo said. “You have to be his coach to understand how good he is.”

Seekonk started the game with six straight hits; three on the first pitch.

Lush led off the first inning with a double, followed by a Borges single he advanced to second on from an errant throw. Kropis drove them both in with a single. He was thrown out at third on Baldizar’s ensuing single, but John Payne and Connor Flynn (RBI) followed with base hits for a 3-0 lead.

Payne’s aggressive lead led to an error on a pick-off at second to bring him in. Flynn stole third and another error on the throw scored him.

“We do a lot of scouting, so we kind of knew the kid we were facing,” DeMelo said. “We were ready for him.”

Adversity didn’t hit Borges until a walk and a single eventually put runners on second and third with no outs in the fourth inning, but he forced the next three batters into outs. He also struck out two with a runner on second base to end the sixth.

Pittsfield batted 0-for-6 against him with runners in scoring position and were 0-for-2 against Arruda.

DeMelo credits Kropis for his vocal support to keep Borges light. Borges’ own execution and mentality took care of the rest in a dominant outing.

“I always think I need to do the best,” Borges said. “My focus today was pitching. I was like, ‘If I didn’t hit today, it’s OK. Your job is pitching and do your best.’ … This win has me so excited. My whole family was here. I tried doing my best and I was confident in myself.”

Seekonk added three more runs in the fourth inning, led by Borges’ two-run single and an RBI single from Baldizar.
