The Karen Read murder trial will reconvene this morning at 9 a.m. in Norfolk Superior Court in Dedham for a 25th day of testimony.

For the first time in a while in the lengthy trial, the day will start with a fresh witness. Attorneys did not telegraph who that witness will be, but there are technical experts still listed on the prosecution’s witness list. Judge Beverly Cannone, who had often reminded attorneys not to waste time with inefficient organization of evidence to be admitted and for repetitive testimony throughout the trial, on Thursday said the case was “on schedule.”

Thursday began with the continued testimony of Massachusetts State Police Lt. Brian Tully, who oversees the detectives stationed at the Norfolk District Attorney’s office who had jurisdiction over investigating the homicide of John O’Keefe and any other homicide in the county. Tully’s testimony went over cell phone tower data and surveillance footage, as well as early decisions his detectives made in the case. The testimony offered a bit of a return to normalcy following the two-day testimony of Trooper Michael Proctor, the who served as the lead investigator.

Proctor admitted to a series of “inappropriate” private texts while he was conducting his investigation in which he called Read, among other things, a “whack job” and that “hopefully she kills herself.”

Thursday also saw testimony from three forensic scientists who performed forensic analysis on evidence found at the scene, as well as a Needham PD officer tasked with getting DNA samples from the lead investigators in the case for those forensic scientists to use as profiles. Defense attorneys had no cross-examination of any of these witnesses.

Prosecutors say Read, 44, of Mansfield, drunk and angry, struck O’Keefe with her Lexus SUV outside 34 Fairview Road in Canton in the early morning hours of Jan. 29, 2022, leaving him dead or dying in the front yard of a fellow Boston Police officer who had invited the pair, as well as others drinking at Waterfall Bar and Grill in central Canton that night, back for an afterparty.
