One of the most recognized and enduring images of WWII is the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima. When this June 14,1951 photo was taken, the battle flag that was raised on the summit of Mt. Suribachi was being put on display in the lobby of the Hotel Statler In New York City by a Marine Corps color guard .The flag was brought up from the Marine Corps Museum at Quantico, Va, so that it could be displayed at the convention of the fifth Marine division which opened the next day.
