Red Sox injury updates: Wilyer Abreu likely back ‘sooner rather than later’
The Red Sox have been bitten by the injury bug harder than just about anyone else in baseball, but last week the club suffered perhaps its strangest setback yet when outfielder Wilyer Abreu slipped and fell down the dugout steps, spraining his right ankle in the process.
The good news is Abreu is making a fast recovery and could return to the club within days.
The rookie outfielder was a full participant in pregame activities Tuesday, and manager Alex Cora said he’s making quicker progress in his recovery than initially expected.
“It feels like Willy is going to be back with us sooner rather than later,” Abreu said.
How soon? Abreu is eligible to come off the 10-day injured list on Thursday, which Cora said is potentially in play. He would likely play one rehab game before being activated, but whether Abreu returns Thursday or over the weekend during the Yankees series, Cora said the rookie deserves a lot of credit for putting himself in a good position.
“We were thinking about more, it was going to be longer, but it feels like it’s going to be a lot shorter,” Cora said. “A testament to him for his willingness to do everything possible to be out there, and it’s been a great recovery.”
Cora provided a number of other injury updates prior to Tuesday’s game as well.
Masataka Yoshida (left thumb strain) was activated from the IL on Tuesday, and Cora said he will likely sit Wednesday so Tyler O’Neill (right knee soreness) can ease back in the lineup as the DH. Yoshida will get regular playing time at DH afterwards, and Cora said they are not considering playing him in the outfield at this time.
After returning on Wednesday, the plan is for O’Neill to move back to the outfield on Thursday. Cora said he’s made a lot of progress over the last two days but they’ll need to be careful going forward.
Triston Casas (torn cartilage in left rib cage) is taking grounders but still hasn’t begun swinging the bat. Casas is eligible to come off the 60-day IL on June 21, but at this rate he could likely need more time to start swinging, fully ramp up and complete a rehab assignment.
Vaughn Grissom (right hamstring strain) is feeling better and doing some baseball activities. Romy Gonzalez (left hamstring strain) is likely to begin a rehab assignment on Wednesday. Rafael Devers, who sat out Sunday due to knee soreness, is feeling good and Cora said the issue is no longer a concern.
