King Philip excels on the road again, ousting Lincoln-Sudbury

SUDBURY — It’s becoming kind of old hat for the King Philip softball team in this postseason to knock off a powerhouse on the road.

On Tuesday, it was fifth-seeded Peabody. On Saturday afternoon, it was No. 4 Lincoln-Sudbury which felt the axe from the Warriors.

Taking advantage of six errors by the host Warriors, KP was opportunistic in breaking a 1-1 tie with five unanswered runs en route to a 6-2 win and a date with No. 1 Wachusett in the Division 1 semifinals.

“We definitely took advantage of some opportunities, that’s for sure,” King Philip coach Kate Comeau said.

Lincoln-Sudbury outhit the Warriors, 6-4, but King Philip sophomore McCoy Walsh was brilliant in working her way out of trouble. She struck out 12 and walked only one in stranding seven L-S runners.

“McCoy is just a fighter,” Comeau said.

KP (16-9) gave Walsh some early breathing room when first baseman Ali Gill led off the game with a double. After taking third on a ground out, she scored on an error with two outs.

“It was so huge picking up that first run because it gives you that little bit of breathing room through the game,” Comeau said.

It stayed 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth, when Sarah Danielson and Sophie Jorjorian reached with one out. Walsh was one strike away from getting out with no damage but a wild pitch allowed Danielson to score the tying run.

It didn’t stay tied for long as the visiting Warriors took the lead for good in the top of the fifth.

Kiera Lawrence led off with a single and went to third when Syd Burch’s bunt was misplayed. Gill was intentionally walked to load the bases with no out.

Kelsey Blanchette (CG, 1 ER, 4H) got Kelley for the first out but Taylor Regan’s fly ball to left was just deep enough to score Lawrence for a 2-1 lead.

One inning later, the wheels came off the L-S wagon at a most inopportune time.

Jo Bennett reached on a one out error before Blanchette struck our Allie Cecere. A walk to Lawrence kept the inning going before Burch reached on an error to load the bases.

Gill made L-S pay for the extra outs as she singled to right, scoring a pair to make it 4-1. Kelley followed with a two-run single and the Warriors had a 6-1 lead in the blink of an eye.

L-S threatened to cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Lia Mazzocchi and Danielson led off with singles. A double steal netted the Warriors a run but Walsh wound up striking out the side for the third time in the game to diffuse the threat.

From there, it was an easy cruise home for KP to earn another trip to the state semifinals.
