Craig Breslow on Red Sox so far: ‘We need to be better’

Prior to Wednesday’s game, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow offered a realistic assessment of the club’s performance. The Red Sox have proven resilient, he said, but at the end of the day they’ve been a .500 team.

“I think where we are is we’re .500 right now, a game below .500, and we need to be better,” Breslow said. “I think the way that we’ve gotten here is maybe a little different than teams would have expected given that we’ve pitched really well, we’re young, dynamic and athletic, but the offense has been plagued by variance.

“There have been times we’ve looked really good and swung the bat really well,” he continued, “and times where we’ve not scored nearly enough runs and the at bats with runners in scoring position haven’t been what we wanted.”

Breslow credited the Red Sox for making progress in a variety of areas. He said the infield defense is significantly better than it was a month ago despite all of the injuries, thanks in large part to David Hamilton at shortstop, Dom Smith at first base and even Rafael Devers at third. He described the outfield as “almost immeasurably better” than where it was and credited Jarren Duran for his improvement along with the rookies Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu.

Still, the end result of all that improvement hasn’t always translated into wins. Breslow acknowledged that their injury situation has made the club’s path more difficult.

“I’m very mindful of not making injuries an excuse, but they are something we’ve had to navigate and overcome,” Breslow said. “We also have to constantly look for ways to improve our roster, we’re still in the business of trying to win as many big league games as we possibly can.”

How can the Red Sox improve their roster? Getting bodies back off the IL will help, and in the coming weeks the club should get Wilyer Abreu, Vaughn Grissom, Masataka Yoshida and Triston Casas back in the lineup. Breslow has also shown a willingness to be active in the free agent and trade markets, having previously brought in players like Smith and Garrett Cooper to solidify first base after Casas’ injury.

But as for the notion of whether or not the club has met expectations, exceeded them or “underperformed” — as Sam Kennedy controversially said earlier this week — Breslow said the way he sees it, the Red Sox are who their record says they are, no matter how he or anyone else labels them.

“I think that’s always a dangerous statement to make and if I’ve learned anything over the last week it’s maybe to say we are where we are,” Breslow said. “And we can’t hide from that.”
