Ticker: Seasonal public restrooms open in Boston Common; free bike ride redemptions amid Orange Line closure
The Friends of the Public Garden’s public restrooms in Boston Common are now fully open for the season.
The bathrooms are accessible for visitors to both the Common and Public Garden. The restrooms are found along MacArthur Mall — halfway between the Charles/Beacon entrance to the Common and the mid-block crossing of Charles Street.
The program has once again been recognized by the Massachusetts State Senate, which granted $50,000 toward this pilot public restrooms initiative. The restrooms trailer includes three women’s stalls and a sink, two men’s stalls, three urinals, and a sink, and one ADA restroom.
A security person is on-site during the hours of operation. The restrooms are cleaned every four hours while open.
The trailer is also a site for public art. The trailer has pieces from Dawn Spears titled, WHAT IT WAS BEFORE I & II, BEST FRIENDS, STRAWBERRY DAUGHTERS, SEQUAN WEÉSUMMIS (SPRING SISTER), STRAWBERRY MATRIARCHY.
This year’s trailer also features an image of the ancient Indigenous landscape that became the Common and Garden, thanks to City Archaeologist Joe Bagley.
Free bike ride redemptions amid Orange Line closure
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and the City of Boston are extending free Bluebikes ride redemptions through June 9 during the Orange Line closure.
Blue Cross and the city are providing Bluebikes unlock codes. The unlocks are available to non-members of Bluebikes and can be redeemed for both traditional pedal bikes and the innovative ebikes (per minute fees apply). The unlocks are available for use only during the closure and while supplies lasts.
Individuals can access the five free unlocks using code MBTAORANGEMAY through the Bluebikes app. These credits can be used across the system’s 13 municipalities: Arlington, Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Newton, Revere, Salem, Somerville, and Watertown.
