The Epic Journey of the First Porsche Turbo
Calling all Porschephiles, prepare to witness a true automotive legend reborn. The prestigious Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace (August 30th-September 1st) will unveil the one-and-only 1973 Porsche 911 Turbo Concept – the car that ignited an icon.
The Birth of a Turbocharged Beauty
This marvel is the first road-going model ever to wear the coveted “Turbo” badge, a symbol of unbridled power that continues to thrill drivers today. Unveiled at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show, this silver dream machine set the template for an enduring performance legend.
A Show-Stopping Vision
Consider a 911 that combined supreme performance with grand touring luxury. That’s precisely what Porsche envisioned with this concept. Its striking silver paintwork, hand-painted “Turbo” script, and wider Fuchs wheels hinted at a future filled with turbocharged exhilaration. Wider Fuchs wheels completed the picture, suggesting a car poised to devour the asphalt. This show car was a two-year preview of the production 930 Turbo, which would become Germany’s fastest car upon its 1975 arrival.
More Than Meets the Eye
While the concept stole the show in Frankfurt, a secret lurked beneath its hood. The headline-grabbing 2.7-litre turbo flat-six wasn’t quite ready for its debut. In a clever twist, Porsche disguised a naturally aspirated engine with mock-up turbo components, cleverly crafted from wood and painted to fool the crowds. Talk about a convincing illusion!
A Legacy Forged in Steel
Despite the engine charade, the concept captivated audiences. It was a glimpse into Porsche’s future, showcasing three key innovations. Not only did it introduce the “Turbo” moniker, but it also previewed design elements for the later “G-Model” 911 and the ultra-rare 3.0 RS road car.
From Showstopper to Racer
Following its Frankfurt triumph, the concept embarked on a world tour, gracing motor shows in Paris, Tokyo, and Melbourne. Its journey continued upon returning to Stuttgart, where it served as a testbed for the upcoming RSR racer. Equipped with numerous pre-production RSR parts, it caught the eye of Australian racing driver and Porsche importer Alan Hamilton.
From Concept to Competition
Hamilton saw an opportunity to secure the first RSR, mistaking the concept for a pre-production model. A deal was struck, and the car was shipped to Australia. There, it enjoyed a brief racing career in Hamilton’s capable hands before finding new homes among Porsche enthusiasts in the following decades.
Across the Pond and Back
IIn 2010, the Turbo concept embarked on a new adventure, crossing the Pacific to the United States. It made a rare public appearance at the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance that same year. After a six-year American sojourn, the car was acquired by its current owner, who brought it back to Europe.
A Time Capsule Ready to Captivate
Now meticulously restored to its original 1973 Frankfurt show car condition, this automotive time capsule boasts a genuine turbo engine. Prepare to be mesmerised as it graces the prestigious lawns of Hampton Court Palace.
The Legacy Lives On
The 1973 Porsche 911 Turbo Concept is a symbol of Porsche’s relentless pursuit of innovation. Its influence continues to be felt in today’s exhilarating turbocharged 911s.
