Red Sox injury updates: Masataka Yoshida expected to start rehab assignment Friday

Masataka Yoshida is feeling better and could begin a rehab assignment as soon as this weekend, manager Alex Cora said Tuesday.

The Red Sox designated hitter has been sidelined since May 1 with a left thumb strain and only recently began swinging again after spending weeks unable to grip a bat without pain. Having missed more than a month, Yoshida would likely need several rehab games before potentially returning to the big league lineup.

Yoshida was among a bevy of injury updates Cora provided prior to Tuesday’s game.

Red Sox place rookie outfielder on IL with sprained ankle

In addition to Wilyer Abreu, right-hander Chris Martin is also expected to be placed on the IL. Martin hasn’t pitched since last Thursday and fellow right-hander Zack Kelly rejoined the big league club Tuesday in anticipation of being called up to fill his spot. Cora said pregame they were still looking at a few things before making a final decision, and as of this writing no roster move has been made official.

Tyler O’Neill (right knee inflammation) is expected to return to the big league club on Wednesday. The outfielder was in the lineup for a rehab appearance in Worcester on Tuesday and barring any setbacks the expectation is he’ll be activated.

Isaiah Campbell was scheduled to make his sixth rehab appearance for Worcester on Tuesday. Entering the evening the right-hander had a perfect 0.00 ERA over 5.1 innings through his first five appearances, with eight strikeouts against two walks and two hits.
