How Patriots coaches want to see Joe Milton III to develop at QB

FOXBORO — Joe Milton III certainly has NFL arm strength. That’s quickly apparent while watching the Patriots rookie sixth-round pick outthrow Jacoby Brissett, Drake Maye and Bailey Zappe during OTAs.

But where else does Milton need to develop to advance beyond just a hard-throwing developmental passer?

“The number one trait with any quarterback, in my eyes — this is, I guess, a philosophical thing — it’s just decision-making. It’s nice to have a big arm, but if you can’t make the right decision, I mean, you’ll be throwing cannonballs to the other side, to the other team,” head coach Jerod Mayo, who praised Milton’s “cannon of an arm” said. “Accuracy, competitiveness, all that stuff is definitely important.”

Milton, who revealed Tuesday that he grew up as a Patriots fan in South Florida, believes that will come as he continues to learn from offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and quarterbacks coach TC McCartney.

“Just understanding that everything our quarterback coach and our OC says, AVP and TC, they do a great job of telling you that your feet goes along with your eyes. So whatever your feet are doing, your eyes should be doing the same,” Milton said.

Quarterbacks coach TC McCartney has seen Milton make “great strides” this spring.

“I mean, he can throw the ball. It’s very impressive. He gives you the ability to push the ball down the field, he can make every throw,” McCartney said. “But there’s a lot more to playing quarterback, so we’re focusing on those things too. … Timing, footwork, tying our eyes to our feet, ball coming to the right place at the right time.”

Van Pelt has also been impressed with Milton’s development.

“Joe’s been excellent. Joe’s a very talented passer. He can do some really great things with his legs and his arm,” Van Pelt said. “He’s come on strong. He’s made some really strong throws in this camp, as well.”

Milton is currently taking fourth-team reps behind Brissett, Maye and Zappe. He’s competing with Zappe for a roster or practice squad spot behind Brissett and Maye.
