‘The Acolyte’ powers up fresh Star Wars saga

Even now, nearly 50 years later, there’s still something about the “Star Wars” universe that gives first-timers like Amandla Stenberg, who stars in Tuesday’s Disney+ series “The Acolyte,” a thrill like nowhere else.

“I had to go to Disneyland a couple days ago so Disney could film me going on the Star Wars ride,” Stenberg, 25, began in a Zoom interview. “I got really emotional on that ride.

“Because working on something like this, you have to compartmentalize to a certain degree. Just so you can do your job and not freak out. You have to devote yourself to the work in front of you.

“I’m getting to a point now where I just get to see how international, widespread and deep love for the series is. It fills me with just a reverence and a wonder — and makes me really emotional.

“It’s nice to be letting that wash over us now. I mean, it has the entire time since I got offered the job but now we really just get to appreciate it.”

The live-action, 8-episode “Acolyte” begins with a shocking crime spree that soon revolves around a Jedi master (Lee Jung-jae).

Is the Acolyte Stenberg?

“That remains to be seen. That’s the whole quandary of the show in a lot of ways,” she answered, “because there are so many narratives taking place simultaneously. That’s something that I love about it: It’s a really complicated story.

“In terms of my characters, I play twins who have been separated by trauma that has sent them in two different directions in their lives.”

Mae is perhaps the acolyte while Osha is, Stenberg said, “The twin who was formerly a Jedi, left the order and is now a mechanic on ships.

“She is accused of a mystery murder because, basically, her twin sister is still alive. And she’s out there. And not only that, she’s met some very dangerous dark characters who are influencing her and whose bidding she’s doing.

“Now the sisters must confront each other.”

For Stenberg, whose career began in her early teens and whose credits include “Bodies Bodies Bodies” and “The Hate U Give,” did one moment stand out during filming?

“Playing twins was so fascinating. Because in a way it was emotionally a confrontation of myself. That felt like deep work — to go inside of myself and the opportunity to translate it into this story. Being in this vivid universe was just really special.

“Hopefully, the moments in which those two sides do interact with each other, you’ll feel the push and pull and conflict of those things, to illustrate how complicated it can be to be a person.”

“The Acolyte” streams the first 2 of its 8 episodes June 4 on Disney+
