Scouted: The best summer whites for a stylish season
Memorial Day is behind us, which marked the unofficial start to summer. And in the fashion realm, it means we can now wear white with abandon.
I know that silly etiquette rule — which started back in The Gilded Age — has been long outdated. These days, thanks to widespread support for the idea of individualized fashion choices — we can wear whatever color we want any time of year. Just ask Vogue magazine. “Some of the world’s best-dressed women from, yes, Coco Chanel, to Gigi Hadid, to Michelle Obama,” it wrote, “have worn the color all year round.”
All that said, the modern-day pleasure of wearing white in hot weather lies both in how cool it keeps you (white reflects light) and in the lighter weight of the fabrics you pick. It can also be a style throwdown.
Here are examples of utterly fantastic white pieces — from standout statements to simple and relaxed luxuries, each with their own personalities — that are pristine and perfect for this summer moment.
Office-meets-summer: Part elegant pant, part short, the extremely flattering but professional Long Pleated Trouser Short In Drapey Viscose ($125.99 on jcrew.com) walks a fine and fun line between worlds. The hybrid design has a dressed-up feel in its soft, flexible fabric, but its culotte-like cut also nods to summer.
Ethereal and gauzy: Nothing says “otherworldly fairy princess” like an angelic and delicate sweater that looks like it’s been spun from gossamer. And the Linen & Organic-Cotton Cabled Pullover ($99 on garnethill.com) fits that bill. Buy it in the color Sea Salt, and then pop it over a camisole or a strappy linen dress when the sun sets.
The soul of island cool: White denim is the ultimate in casually chic summer staples. And Paige’s ankle-length version of white jeans, called Amber – Crisp White ($199 on paige.com) is crafted in a comfort stretch material with a mid-rise waist. They’re an unquestionable go-to thanks to details like vintage silver hardware and a white back patch.
Neat as a pin: When the day calls for something proper and elegant with a big dose of easy minimalism, throw on the Poplin Cross-Waist Midi Dress ($60 on bananarepublicfactory.com). It’s sharp point collar and button neck says “all business” but it’s sleeveless design and wrap-around self-tying belt lean toward fun.
Buttoned-up: Is it a serious-minded power suit? Or is it a fun-loving jumpsuit? Both, actually. Alice + Olivia’s Robin Halter Split-Leg Vest Jumpsuit ($550 on neimanmarcus.com) is sexy and slinky (thanks to the halter vest neckline and split leg cuts) enough for a party, or toss a blazer over it and head to a meeting without breaking a sweat.
Vacation-ready: How do you communicate relaxation without looking sloppy in the slightest? With an ensemble like the Tuscany Getaway Set ($478 on frankandeileen.com). Comprised of the Eileen Button-Up (with long sleeves, button cuffs, and an ample shirttail hem) and the Maisie Wide-Leg Pant (a pull-on with slant-front pockets) the combo comes in a dreamy washed linen, and flows effortlessly with your every move.
Really romantic: Eyelet dates back to the 16h century, and was extremely popular in the 19th century. But the Arushi Eyelet Dress ($598 on veronicabeard.com) is so exquisite, it’s undeniably this-century. Crafted from 100% washed cotton, its sweeping maxi hem and pin-tucked bodice accentuate your waist and femininity, as does the line of delicate buttons in front. And it’s versatile enough that you’ll find yourself wearing it to all sorts of occasions this summer. And probably beyond.
