Jacoby Brissett’s familiarity with Patriots offense gives entire unit an advantage
FOXBORO — Jacoby Brissett is the most experienced quarterback in Patriots OTAs, and through two open sessions with reporters, he’s also looked like the best.
So, it makes sense that, if the season began today, he would be the Patriots’ starter.
Of course, it helps that he spent one season gaining valuable reps in new Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt’s system with the Browns in 2022, so he also has a leg up in that regard on rookie third overall pick Drake Maye, 2022 fourth-round pick Bailey Zappe and rookie sixth-rounder Joe Milton.

“It’s been good,” Brissett said of readjusting to Van Pelt’s system. “Not only is it good for me as far as like me playing and going out there and playing fast, but it’s also the ability to help those guys in other rooms and tell them what I know we’re looking for in this offense and what I’m looking for from the quarterback position on certain plays. I think it just helps me play faster and helps me help other people.”
Brissett likes that Van Pelt’s offense, which is similar to what the Browns ran with head coach Kevin Stefanski since 2020, is “multiple.”
“It allows you to bring out the best player in you. They obviously tailor the offense around the quarterback and the things that we do, and obviously the players that we have,” Brissett said. “As a quarterback, you want to make sure that you have a wide variety of things you can do, and It think we have the players to help us do that.”
Brissett was impressive in Wednesday’s session, completing 13-of-16 passes in a competitive team setting. Brissett has been the Patriots’ first quarterback under center in 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 drills since the first day of OTAs last week.
“I feel like I’m getting better. Obviously getting comfortable with the guys. Obviously I’m comfortable with this offense. I’ve been in it before. But obviously getting re-familiar with it and the guys,” Brissett said. “Our defense does a good job of giving us so many different looks. Every day is a game day. I’m excited every time I come out on this field to go out there and get better, make mistakes and correct them and try to put my best foot forward.”
There’s still plenty of time before the start of the season in September, so Maye, and even Zappe, will have an opportunity to pass Brissett on the quarterback depth chart. So far, the Patriots are taking things slowly with their rookie first-round pick and allowing Brissett to use his familiarity to bring some stability in a new offense.
