Part of Stillwater prison remains on lockdown following weekend attack on corrections officers

The living unit at the Stillwater prison where two corrections officers were assaulted over the weekend remains on lockdown, Minnesota Department of Corrections officials said Tuesday.

The rest of the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Stillwater, which is located in Bayport, has returned to normal programming, officials said.

According to the DOC, the incident started around 11:30 a.m. Saturday when a prisoner attacked an officer at a housing unit security post. Another prisoner and another officer tried to stop the attack, but during the melee, a third prisoner began assaulting the second officer who had come to help, officials said. The two officers were treated at a hospital and released.

The two prisoners who attacked the corrections officers were transported to Oak Park Heights, the state’s maximum security prison.

The DOC’s investigation is ongoing and will soon be sent to the Washington County Attorney’s Office for review for potential charges, said Aaron Swanum, a spokesman for the DOC.
