Alleged Braintree and Plymouth stabber not mentally fit for trial, doctor tells court

The Martha’s Vineyard man charged in a stabbing spree from Braintree to Plymouth was hit with a warrant accusing him of attempted murder in connection with the alleged slashing of 4 young girls in a Braintree movie theater just as a doctor told the court today the suspect was in a “psychotic” state and recommended he be locked up for a psychological evaluation

The judge at Plymouth district court agreed and Jared Ravizza, 26, of Chilmark, was referred to Bridgewater State Hospital.

Ravizza  is charged with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault to murder (armed), and indecent exposure, after police say he stabbed a pair of employees at a Plymouth McDonald’s before leading police on a chase that ended in a crash and his arrest in Sandwich.

In addition, the Braintree Police department announced late Tuesday morning it had sought and received warrants charging Ravizza with four counts of Assault to Murder and four counts of Assault and Battery with Dangerous Weapon in connection with his alleged attack on four girls aged 9-17, at an AMC movie theater Saturday night in Braintree.

Braintree Police praised the girls for their bravery during and after the horrific attack.

“We would like to call attention to the bravery displayed by  these four young women, both in the aftermath of the incident and in their recovery. Each  victim is improving and healing, and our thoughts and support are with them as they navigate  this difficult time,” Braintree Police said in a statement.

Ravizza was in Plymouth District Court Tuesday for arraignment on the charges in connection with the alleged attack on two employees at a Plymouth McDonald’s when a psychologist who interviewed him said she felt he was too mentally ill to work with his court appointed attorney toward his defense.

According to the court doctor, Ravizza has been struggling with mental illness for two years. His illness is such, she said, that he shows signs of a “very serious thought disorder” and is in an “active psychotic state” that includes delusions and feelings that his actions are controlled by forces outside of himself.

The doctor recommended that Ravizza be remanded to Bridgewater State Hospital for further evaluation, which the court and state agreed with.

Police in Connecticut are also looking for Ravizza in connection with a murder in the town of Deep River. Connecticut State Police have indicated charges are pending in that case.
