Benches clear late as Red Sox rally past Brewers for 2-1 win

It seemed in the moment like a perfectly routine play. Chris Martin drew a ground ball to first base, covered the bag to record the final out of the seventh inning and began walking back to the dugout.

But then Milwaukee Brewers first base coach Quintin Berry began shouting at him, Martin turned around to respond and all hell broke loose, with both benches and bullpens clearing as the umpires attempted to prevent a full-on brawl.

The situation didn’t reach that point and nobody was ejected from the game, but the altercation was a bizarre sidebar on what was an all-around exciting day at Fenway Park.

Needing a win to avoid a sweep, the Red Sox handed the ball to Tanner Houck and he delivered once again. The right-hander limited the Brewers to one run over six strong innings, and in the bottom of the eighth Jarren Duran came through with a go-ahead RBI single to lead Boston to a 2-1 win in the series finale.

Facing one of the best lineups in the big leagues, Houck was tested but largely kept the Brewers in check. He stranded men at the corners in the first and a man at second in the fourth, and in the fifth he allowed a run on a William Contreras RBI single but limited the damage from there, escaping a two-on, one-out jam to keep it a 1-1 game.

Houck finished with one run allowed over six innings with seven hits, a walk and seven strikeouts. His 1.90 ERA on the season is now the lowest by a Red Sox starter through his first 11 starts since Clay Buchholz (1.62) in 2013.

The Red Sox weren’t able to muster much offense either, but in the fourth inning Wilyer Abreu smoked a triple to the deepest part of the ballpark and scored on a Rafael Devers sacrifice fly. Then, in the eighth, Ceddanne Rafaela came through with a leadoff double, setting the stage for Duran’s go-ahead knock.

Kenley Jansen pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his ninth save of the season.

With the win the Red Sox are back over .500 at 27-26 and will begin a three-game road series against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday. Cooper Criswell (2-1, 2.86) will face Baltimore’s Cole Irvin (4-2, 3.15), and first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
