Diamond dynasty: Latin Academy captures 20th straight BCL softball title
BOSTON – For two straight decades, Latin Academy has been the cream of the crop of the Boston City League and Saturday afternoon was no different.
The Dragons scored in five of six frames and came away with their 20th straight City League softball title at Boston College with an 11-1 win over O’Bryant.
“Consistency,” said long-time coach Rocco Zizza about how the team has kept winning. “Having consistent coaching, consistent kids, consistent repetition and consistent quality opponents and those are the key things.”
After a 2-9 start, Latin Academy (13-10) won eight of nine down the stretch, with six of those coming on a win streak right after their ninth loss.
It was senior captain Ellie Etemad-Gilbertson who led the way at Boston College as she drove in four, scored two times and notched a pair of extra-base hits.
“She’s just a catalyst,” Zizza said about the No. 2 hitter. “She makes everything a little bit better because she’s high intensity, so it makes everyone a little bit better.”
She has won four titles with Latin Academy as she won her second Most Outstanding Player of the contest. She also scored her 200th career run in the first as she made it 2-0 after scoring on an RBI double for Caitlin Sweeney.
“It’s so much fun having a full team with people who are just like dogs and just go their hardest,” Etemad-Gilbertson said about having a lineup that contributes from top to bottom.
The Dragons scored four times in the first as the first five runners got on base and freshman Ashlyn Brady got thrown out at the plate to end the bottom of the first.
The offense amounted 11 hits and scored two runs each in the second, third and sixth with Etemad-Gilbertson accounting for an RBI in the second and the sixth.
The lone run in the fourth came on a sacrifice fly for Etemad-Gilbertson.
Seventh-grader Madelyn Andrade (two hits, three runs) also contributed on offense.
“It’s nice,” said Etemad-Gilbertson about playing with 11 underclassmen. “They’re like our children. We’re kind of like babysitting them, but we’re all close and they’re our friends, too.”
On the mound, seventh-grader Camryn Collier and Brady combined on a two-hitter while striking out seven. The one O’Bryant (9-9) run came on a Brady wild pitch as junior captain Nia Buyu crossed the plate to make it 9-1 in the top of the sixth.
