David Castillo, Armanis Romero power Boston English to BCL baseball title

CHESTNUT HILL — Boston English finished off the Boston City League season in style with a 9-1 win over Latin Academy to capture back-to-back baseball championships.

The top of the lineup took care of business for head coach Christian Ortiz as leadoff hitter David Castillo reached base three times and scored two runs along with two stolen bases, and Armanis Romero was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI doubles out of the two hole for the team (18-2, 11-0 league).

“It’s a pleasure to be back here as the boys really worked for hard for this and when they heard it was at Boston College, they were really excited about it,” said Ortiz of the game played at Boston College. “They worked tremendously hard and we had a really good core group that came back.”

After Boston English took control 4-0 in the bottom of the third buoyed by Romero’s two doubles, starting pitcher Manny De Jesus tired in the top of the fourth inning. After yielding a run on a sacrifice fly, Nate Bonilla walked and leadoff hitter Junior Calderon laced a two-out single, bringing the tying run to the plate for the Dragons (13-8).

Castillo decided to do things from both sides of the field with 2.1 innings of electric relief in place of De Jesus as the fifth-year senior faced the minimum with five strikeouts and put away any chance of a Latin Academy comeback.

“This means a lot as you know, we didn’t finish things off in states last year, and that’s our goal. That’s the main goal this year,” said Castillo. “Coming in, we talked a lot about the steppingstones and what we have to do to mentally to prepare before we get there.”

Latin Academy were its own worst enemy as a handful of defensive miscues allowed runners on base to move into scoring position and score against hard-luck losing pitcher sophomore Jack Shapiro.

“I felt Jack was a little bit nervous at first and had some jitters. He was shut down last season from pitching due to injury, so it took a little bit for him to find himself this season,” said Dragons head coach Justin Curley. “That’s a great team over there. Castillo is the best player in the league and it shows, but I thought we had good poise. Once they went to Castillo, the bats got slow and he has some really good stuff.”

Both Castillo and Shapiro were sitting mid-80s on the Boston College radar in a pitching duel despite the final score.

De Jesus picked up the win with Castillo and Maleek Haley combining on the three-hitter and the second consecutive BCL title.

“That’s what David does for us so if we get a lead and most of the time he will just silence teams. He seals the deal for us and it’s exactly what happened,” said Ortiz. “Armanis Romero has probably been one of the best offensive players I’ve ever coached in my six years coaching high school baseball. It is something I haven’t quite seen and I’ve coached guys at the highest levels. He’s doing something really unique.”
