Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed Brings Radical Design in Launch of Brand’s Exclusive Mythos Series

Mercedes-AMG has just unveiled the PureSpeed, the inaugural vehicle in its ultra-exclusive and high-cost Mythos series. This striking open-top two-seater roadster draws heavily from Mercedes’ storied past in racing, echoing both its vintage race cars and modern Formula 1 design cues.

While not explicitly stated by Mercedes, the PureSpeed’s foundation is clearly derived from the SL convertible, evident from the shared headlight and taillight designs. However, the PureSpeed stands apart with its unique styling elements. The traditional Mercedes grille is replaced by a streamlined, grille-less “sharknose” front bumper, accompanied by a bold, white-painted AMG logo on the lower grille.

One of the most radical design choices is the elimination of the windshield, replaced by a halo bar reminiscent of those seen in F1 cars. The rear’s flying buttresses pay homage to the 300 SLR driven by Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson in their historic 1955 Mille Miglia victory. The car’s paint scheme, transitioning from Le Mans red to graphite grey, is inspired by the 1924 Targa Florio-winning Mercedes.

The PureSpeed also incorporates advanced aerodynamics, borrowing technology from the Mercedes-AMG One hypercar. Carbon fiber aero elements on the lower sections enhance aerodynamic efficiency, while carbon wheel covers optimize airflow and improve brake cooling.

According to AMG chairman Michael Schiebe, the PureSpeed Concept epitomizes the purest form of performance and driving pleasure. “Radically open, neither a roof nor the windscreen separate the two passengers from the elements. You can experience light, air, and passion unfiltered with all your senses,” Schiebe remarked. He also highlighted the car’s exclusivity and Formula 1-inspired design elements, such as the HALO structure, which elevate the driving experience.

Although Mercedes has not disclosed the PureSpeed’s powertrain details, it’s expected to feature the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 from the SL63. This could mean a choice between the 577-horsepower base version or the more powerful 805-hp E Performance variant, making it one of the most exhilarating SL models available.

Acquiring a PureSpeed will be a challenge, as you can guess. Production is capped at a mere 250 units, reserved for the most fervent Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts and collectors. While pricing details remain under wraps, it’s clear that this level of exclusivity will command a significant premium.
