Notre Dame Academy ends regular season with big win over Westwood

HINGHAM — They may be in Div. 2, but ever since the school won a girls lacrosse title last year, Notre Dame (Hingham) has been the consensus No. 1 team in the state’s ranks by most metrics.

The Cougars have lived up to expectations this spring and continued their incredible success Tuesday.

Colgate commit Aubrey McMahon paced the scoring with six goals, while fellow senior captain Siobhan Colin (hat trick, assist) added an extra spark as Notre Dame defeated a perennial powerhouse with a 14-10 victory over Westwood to cap the regular season.

“It’s the last game of our regular season,” said Notre Dame coach Meredith Frank McGinnis. “It’s a tournament-feel, right? That’s exactly what you want as you prepare for the postseason.”

After dropping from the Div. 1 field this year following a sustained run of success, some thought Westwood might be a school that could challenge Notre Dame for supremacy. It was a marquee matchup on the slate.

For most of the opening quarter, the game turned out to be a shootout. Thanks to a hat trick in the frame from McMahon, the Cougars (17-1) were able to build a 6-3 lead.

However, Westwood (15-5) kept on battling, as Wolverines junior Emilie DeMaio slipped through traffic and potted a goal to cut it to a 6-4 game with 10:20 to play in the half.

“I know they’re a really great team,” said McMahon. “We were just focusing on ourselves, mostly. Draw controls are the name of the game. That’s what we had to really focus on. My team (was there) for me, setting me up for goals. We’re just working on our offense, and our plays.”

Then, the Cougars did what so many have become accustomed to witnessing. They decided to take over the play. Colin provided two more goals in the waning moments, the latter coming with 28 seconds left in the second quarter to put the Cougars ahead 9-5 at intermission.

“We just have to be consistent in making plays,” Frank McGinnis said. “No team is ever going to quit. No team is ever going to be done. We need to have that mentality, that every team is going to compete to the final whistle.”

The Cougars continued to fire away to start the third quarter, as McMahon (two goals), Emma Connerty and Ava Orlando opened things with a goal apiece to extend things to 12-5. McMahon would add one more with 4:18 to go in the stanza, as Notre Dame began to pull away with a 7-1 scoring run.

Connerty also finished with two goals in the game for Notre Dame.

Westwood was powered by junior Cecilia Thurmond, who finished with a hat trick.

So, what will be the key for Notre Dame, as it begins its latest conquest for a Div. 2 championship?

“We have to regroup,” said Frank McGinnis. “We have to take a good look at the things we’ve done well. We have to improve upon the things we have not done well, and we have to come out and perform for 48 straight minutes.”

McMahon and her teammates will now look to finish the job. Should they succeed in their endeavor in a few weeks, it would mark three straight state titles for the Cougars.

That’s not to say the path there will be easy.

“I think it’s just about working well together,” McMahon said. “Knowing each other. Everyone on our team is a threat. Everybody going hard, everybody looking to score. Just set each other up, and then our defense is definitely really great. We work together really well, and it’s (about) shutting people down. I think that will really help us.”
