Newton North tops Brookline, peaking at right time for tournament

NEWTON – After back-to-back losses in the middle of the season, Newton North has rattled off 10 straight wins and none was more satisfying than the domination of Brookline at home Tuesday night.

With a total team effort, the Tigers came away with a 3-0 boys volleyball victory over the Warriors even with Brookline having a strong push early in the third set.

“It feels really good,” Tigers coach Nile Fox said about the win. “After we took those two losses early in the year against Natick and Brookline, we’ve just been really focusing on and really just trying to come back and play the best volleyball we can. So, we’ve been seeing glimpses of that and today was a glimpse of that we played really well and I’m glad with the results.”

In the third, Brookline (12-6) gave Newton North (15-2) all it could handle with the match knotted 5-5. However, the Tigers answered and regained the lead for good at 6-5 and ended the set overall on a 20-14 run with five different plays notching kills.

It was junior Simon Vardeh who led the way with five aces as well as 12 kills, including six of those coming in the first set that the Tigers won 25-10.

“(Vardeh) was great today,” said Fox. “He’s been really good over the past three games, but today he was really good. I’m just really excited to see what he can do for the rest of the season and in the postseason.”

The team passed the ball at will with the help of senior captain Joaquin Cuevas-Torres as Paul Nelson (three kills), Adam Christianson (seven kills), Sam Huang (seven kills) and Peter Reale (five kills) finished at the net, especially in a 25-19 second set win.

“When we are running in system and we have good passes, then I can set up whoever I want,” Cuevas-Torres said about the ability to share the ball. “So, I feel pretty confident whenever we’re passing well and we’re just doing our jobs on the floor.”

With the state tournament starting next week, Newton North is poised and ready to go up against any competition.

“It is a pretty good feeling,” said Cuevas-Torres about the victory coming with the state tournament looming. “We just know that as long as we’re playing our game, we can’t really lose it.”

Next up, the Tigers will face off at Winchester Wednesday at 6 p.m. in their penultimate contest. Brookline will play at Framingham on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
