MassGOP tells Gov. Maura Healey to get real with Biden over border

The head of the MassGOP is demanding that Gov. Maura Healey do more to tackle the Bay State’s ongoing migrant crisis in the wake of federal inaction on the matter by using her position as a “surrogate” of President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign to lobby for change.

In a letter addressed to Healey and shared with the Herald, MassGOP Chairwoman Amy Carnevale agrees, as the governor has asserted, that the influx of migrants into the United States and Massachusetts comes about through a “federal crisis of inaction,” but says that the governor needs to place the blame for the problem at the feet of her party’s leader.

“Unfortunately, we are disappointed to see you follow suit with that level of inaction by continuing, like the Biden Administration, to succumb to political pandering and perpetuating this crisis,” Carnevale wrote. “This crisis is the result of policies implemented by President Biden, and his ongoing refusal to change course – that is the ‘inaction’ that we see.”

According to the Carnevale it is not the fault of Republicans in Congress that 9.5 million people unlawfully crossed the U.S. border in 2023, but rather is the result of Biden’s refusal to harden the nation’s boundaries with its neighbors.

“The President can and should act. Now is not the time for gentle criticism of the President’s policies. It is past time for action. I write this letter hopeful that you can leverage your relationship with President Biden as a surrogate for his reelection campaign,” the chairwoman wrote.

In her letter, Carnevale implores the governor to tell that the Biden Administration, on behalf of the commonwealth, that the U.S. should reinstate the Trump Administration’s “remain in Mexico” policy, close the border “until illegal crossings cease,” provide a plan for the deportation of the millions of migrants now in the U.S. illegally, increase Coast Guard patrols along the Massachusetts coast line to “prevent illegal immigrant arrivals by boat,” and step up efforts to “locate and protect the more than 85,000 immigrant children reported missing and at risk of exploitation.”

“It’s imperative for our nation and the Commonwealth to address and resolve this immigration crisis, bringing the border under control. If President Biden ever plans to get serious about border security, then he needs more leaders in the Democratic Party like you to demand he do so,” Carnevale wrote.

Biden is scheduled to be in New Hampshire on Tuesday and for a stop in Boston later that day.

The Herald has reached out to the Healey Administration for comment on the MassGOP chairwoman’s letter.
