Time to get the AC going: 90-degree days are coming, NWS says
It may be a good week to check the AC system in your home or figure out how to muscle that window unit into place, as it’s going to be unseasonably warm in Massachusetts for the next several days.
The week ahead will bring the first long stretch of summer-like days of the year, according to the National Weather Service, with some parts of the Bay State set to record 90-degree temperatures.
“It’s a switch in the weather pattern,” NWS meteorologist Bryce Williams told the Herald. “There is a ridge of high pressure moving over the area that’s coming up from the south and moving a warmer air mass overhead.”
That chunk of warm air will also “suppress the showers and the clouds” that we’ve had over the last few weeks, Williams said.
“That’s why we’re going to see more sun and those warmer temperatures,” he said.
The weather service reports patchy fog is possible around Boston on Monday morning before 9 a.m., but the gray and clouds overhead should both start to clear as the day carries on. By midday, most of Greater Boston will be enjoying temperatures around 70 under partly cloudy skies with little wind to speak of.
Overnight lows going into Tuesday should stay close to 60 degrees, according to the weather service, with some clouds expected overnight but no rain forecast.
Tuesday that ridge of warm air arrives and brings temperatures around Boston into the mid-80s. Some parts of the state could see the thermometer creep closer to or over 90-degrees under sunny skies, Williams said.
Tuesday night could see a few clouds roll in, with low temperatures expected to again stay above 60 degrees and no rain expected.
Wednesday will be downright hot compared to the string of wet, 60-degree days that the Boston region endured leading up to and through the weekend. The city is forecast to see a high of 89-degrees and lots of sun. Williams said there are parts of the state where temperatures will climb into the 90s.
“Spots like the Connecticut Valley and the Merrimack Valley,” he said.
Overnight heading into Thursday will be warm and clear around Boston, though there is a chance of some 20 mph wind gusts, according to the weather service.
Another mass of air moves into the region on Thursday, Williams said, though that one should be cooler and bring temperatures back into a more seasonable range.
“Not as cool as we’ve been seeing, but more like the low-80s,” he said.
Temperatures on Thursday are expected to hover in the 85 degree range, and stay above 60 overnight. There is a slight, 30% chance of showers heading into Friday morning, according to the weather service.
As of now both Friday and the pair of weekend days look to be rain-free, with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 70s and mostly clear skies.
